KARACHI: 20-year-old Rohail Iqbal was killed and nine others were wounded in celebratory firing on the eve of Independence Day in different parts of the city, police said on Sunday.
A stray bullet killed Rohail in Gulistan-i-Jauhar area. The police said that that the victim was a first-year student and was standing outside his home in Al-Sham Complex on Rashid Minhas Road when a stray bullet hit him.
He was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the JPMC’s emergency department head Dr Seemin Jamali. He sustained a bullet wound in the head. Gulshan Superintendent of Police Dr Fahad Ahmed told the journalists that Rohail had become a victim of celebratory firing.
Meanwhile, 15-year-old Uzair Iftikhar at Jail Chowrangi and 55-year-old Rehmatullah at old Subzi Mandi were also injured by stray bullets. Both incidents took place within the remit of the Mobina Town police station. A police spokesperson informed about another injured, Shariq Javed, who was wounded in Lines Area within the remit of the Brigade police station.
20-year-old Waleed Muhammad and 30-year-old Abdul Malik also suffered gunshot wounds in Lyari’s Khada Market and Niazi Chowk areas. They were shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment. A stray bullet hit 30-year-old Mohammed Yunus in Chanesar Goth near Rehmania Masjid as well. He was admitted to the JPMC for treatment, Dr Jamali informed.
